NICHOLAS ANTHONY LoFARO
ARTISTRY
Sculpture artist with welding and metalsmithing expertise, as well as a lifetime of experience in writing, drawing, and painting, proficient with clay, plaster, steel, bone and concrete. Specializes in abstraction of nature, science, folklore, mythology and comic book, with a heavy influence from science fiction, horror and the natural world.
My journey as a sculpture artist gratefully began early in my life. My mother was a teacher and an artist, so childhood was full of clay and paint. My father was a mechanic and certainly an expert at showing me how the world works, but he was also a naturalist, guiding my youth through the woods to develop a deep relationship with animals and Earth.
Monsters, dinosaurs, animals and outer space were all part of my childhood, as they not only made up for the majority theme among my brothers and my toys, and our book and movie collection, but they have always filled my imagination. Comic books flooded my adolescence, and I became forever obsessed with character design.
Biology and anatomy disciplined my drawing and painting, while the chaos and order of reality challenged my skill. I am a student of the natural world, so I cannot discredit the wilderness as a most important instructor and imminent sage. Realizing nature into my craft, I learned that art enhanced my life by making it surreal.
Otherworldliness held a special allure in my art as it was boundless and free of the rules of nature. That is why I have always had a special affinity for the horrors of the unnatural, the wonders of science fiction, and the terrors of the unknown.
I took sculpture and art classes when I attended Colorado State University, but I earned a degree in English, with a focus in creative writing, poetry, gothic literature and ethnic studies.
Plaster, animal bone, and wood all became favorite mediums throughout high school and college in my sculpture. Found objects taught me reclamation and reuse, also fragility and strength, as parts were used for both sculptural form and structure.
When I discovered welding, it revealed to me a form of art that held a level of permanence I’d never thought I’d find, and come to love entirely. The clay sculptures of my past had broken in moving about, which is why metal was extremely appealing in its strength and permanence. I discovered that I could sculpt metal as if were clay, and where my previous art found fragility, my new art found strength. I learned to use heat, force and friction as technique.
As a welder and metal sculptor, I have worked with a multitude of fabricated, antique, scrap and reclaimed metal, and am proficient with a plasma-cutter and torch. To create a sculptural environment is a dream. I have accomplished significant structural welds as an independent contractor, so I have a great deal of experience with large structures and challenging situations. My passion for sculpture brought forth my business, LoFaro Metalarts LTD. I am fond of found objects, and quite familiar with machinery, from wing to wheel, cog to gear.
I am in constant pursuit of artistic endeavors that are seemingly impossible. Even if they are scary. Especially if they are scary. Perhaps art made me face my fears. Perhaps it made me bring them to life. Creativity has given me purpose. Art has always been a transport for my imagination.
